WBR PARTNERS DISTRIBUTE 200 BUFFALO BIKES IN RWANDA on April 03, 2014
On March 31, Rwandan TV and newspapers were buzzing with the news of 200 brand new Buffalo Bikes being distributed to students in the Rwamagana District. Local organizations including the Rwandan Cycling Federation (FERWACY), Team Rwanda Cycling (TRC), and Adrien Niyonshuti Cycling Academy (ANCA) came together to distribute bicycles provided by Qhubeka--WBR's partner organization in South Africa.
The Rwamagana District of Rwanda is home to Adrien Niyonshuti, an Olympic cyclist who currently rides professionally in Europe with the MTN Qhubeka Continental Pro Team.
The bicycles were donated to the ANCA in 2013 through the 50 Mile Ride for Rwanda a fundraising ride in the U.S. The late wife of the founder of this event was a school teacher and passionate about education.
"I am very happy for the bicycles and for the support of my team, MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung, as well as World Bicycle Relief, Team Rwanda Cycling, the Federation and the people who participated in the ride in the U.S. to help bring bicycles to school children. Education is very important to the future of the children in Rwanda." -Adrien Niyonshuti
The distribution ceremony was attended by dignitaries from across Rwanda, including the President of the Cycling Federation, the Secretary of State--in charge of primary and secondary schools, the Minister of Sports and Culture, the Governor of East Province, and the Mayor of Rwamagana District, who opened the ceremony with a welcoming speech.
Like WBR's distributions in Zambia, the Rwandan program, monitored by White Dove Foundation, will provide guidance and benefits to help ensure that the new bike owners are successful in utilizing their new transportation.
We at World Bicycle Relief are so thankful for all of these new partners taking the Power of Bicycles to Rwanda!
